Lanna Temple Trails day 6

Wat U-Mong Therachan

Wat U-Mong Therachan

My temple tour finally ended at Wat U-Mong Therachan, located at the back of Chiang Mai Univerrsity. It is said that this temple was erected in the reign of King Mengrai the Great, while its trademark tunnel was built in the following reign of the 8Th king, King Kue Na.

The atmosphere of this temple is different from the temple is different from the others., as the compound is shadier and full of trees, making it suitable for meditation activities. Noticeably, on every tree there is a wooden sign with an insightful quotation to remind visitors of the uncertainty and impermanence of life.

Buddha images are displayed inside the temple’s big tunnel and outside the tunnel there are many ruined images. I walked up the steps to the temple’s chadi, which is different from most other chedis found in Chiang Mai. This one is bell shaped with a round layer resembling the petals of a lotus flower. The date of a lotus flower. The date of its construction is still unknown, but due to its architecture it is assumed to have been built in the early 20th century

My journey to Chiang mai This time made me realize one true thing in life. Many grand ancient temples still exist in the modern city, showing the eternal greatness of the Lanna Empire founded by King Meng Rai. However, although those grand constructions still stand, they have mostly fallen to ruins due to the course of time and today they are considered archeological and historic sites. This simply reminds one of the Buddha’s teachings about the law of impermanence.
