Doi Ang Khang Mountain – Royal Ang Khang Research Station
During the winter, tourists like to travel to the Chaing Mai Province to camp and enjoy the blooming winter plants. Doi Ang Khang standing 1,900 meters above sea level, borders Burma and is located in Amphoe Chai Prakan.
Doi Ang Khang Mountain is a three-hour drive from Chiang Mai. The last part of the journey is a very steep and twisty climb to the summit, which is poised 1,300 m above the Burmese border.
The are several reasons why Doi Ang Khang is an exceptional and eye-catching natural attraction. It has breathtaking scenery, invigorating mountain air, a fresh cool climate as well as the general peace and quiet of the countryside. There are also guesthouses, an excellent small hotel as well as other tourist amenities, so bird watching, mountain biking, trekking or just sitting and contemplating are all possible here.
Also located on Doi Ang Khang Mountain is the Royal Ang Khang Research Station, which is situated 163 km north of Chiang Mai city and is set among the beautiful mountainous scenery. The Station has recently become a very popular destination for the more adventurous traveler to this area.
The agricultural project station was set up in 1969 as a demonstration site for planting and researching flowering plants, temperate fruit trees, vegetables and other crops under the patronage of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Primarily a research centre, it focuses on developing a wider variety of marketable produce for the local hill tribes, which were previously cash-poor and dependent on growing illegal opium as their major source of income. The organic methods employed by the Project have had great success. Such non-tropical fruit as strawberries and raspberries, peaches, apples and plumbs and vegetables like beans and asparagus, have all done well.
